In certain situations balance is everything, life, food, tightrope walking and yes, of course, tooling! Although it may be obvious for some things, it’s possible “Tooling” can be quite easily overlooked! Our tools are balance to0 extreme tolerances, to ensure the maximum performance can be obtained. However, when you take into account the holder, a different story can emerge. Any holder will have an inbuilt tolerance due to its design and nature. Those with moving parts can be due to their makeup, can be further from balanced than those that have none. The holder could be worn or damaged, ideally they should be replaced on a yearly basis. That’s why our shrink to fit holders are better than standard tool holders, less moving parts. Sometime though, extra balancing can be of great benefit, especially when geometry plays a part. Extra large or long tools can gain extra performance from additional balancing. There is also another benefit and when you think about it, not taking it into consideration can have dire consequences. “Electrospindles” are becoming increasingly more powerful and of course, more expensive! It’s not uncommon for a high quality spindle to cost in excess of £50000! If you have a few machines, it’s a considerable sum. Then there is the downtime, should one fail, which is always expensive.
